I am in favor of continued reduction in property taxes for the homeowners in Jersey Village. I believe the exemption rate should be increased to 20% as the law allows for. I am also in favor of bringing more small businesses to our community to increase the tax base.
With the 2020 COVID Pandemic I understand that the previous city council was unable to lower the homestead exemption for the current tax year. I would be in favor of revisiting this for the next tax year and encourage my fellow council members to support the increase exemption rate.
As our city continues to grow and new businesses drive increased tax revenues, it makes sense that our citizens reap the benefit by lowering our tax burdens. As the property values increase with each added accommodation our city brings, the extra exemption becomes more and more crucial.
Encouraging new businesses to take root inside our city is how our tax revenues should increase, not out of the pockets of it's citizens. I support fiscally responsible spending that limits the waste. I would challenge projects that provide limited benefit for the citizens, i.e. the directional signs no one can read, and promote projects that provide value added, i.e. splash pad upgrades or park shelter additions.
